Student Development
Q. How can I best ensure my child's success in music?
A. This is such an important question. There are several things you can do, and if you follow them all, we believe you will provide the ideal conditions for your child to prosper musically, as in life.
1. Always provide the best instrument possible, from a reputable maker. Inferior instruments may prove a false economy, while older instruments should always be checked over by a specialist, and should be scrupulously maintained.
2. Seek out a teacher with a good reputation. A good teacher should possess excellent interpersonal skills. While they should feel comfortable telling you if your child is working below potential, they should also have the maturity to care for the whole child, and not just the musician in the child.
3. Expose the child to musical excellence at every opportunity; that means on CD, in concert, parades, festivals, etc. Experiencing excellence in others has the power to inspire.
4. Encourage your child to perform wherever possible. Pride in performance is an excellent motivator. When mistakes happen, simply point out that it's ok, that's an important part of learning; and always be reassuring.
5. Encourage children to record themselves. We don't hear ourselves as others hear us when we are busy working out what notes to play next. Plus, if you know you'll soon be listening to the results of your efforts, you tend to try harder.
6. Congratulate children on their efforts; remember, approval is what we all crave the most.
